What i like to do: January 2013

I've lived in Worcester park for 22 years now and thought i had a reasonable knowledge of the local parks and woodlands but had never heard of a place called canons farm until a few weeks ago.
The remarkable thing about this is that it's only a fifteen minute drive away and i must have passed it hundreds of times.
There's quite a few birders that frequent the place but I'm quite happy with my own company ambling along scanning the fields and tree lined woods on my lonesome.
As i mentioned in a previous post I'm not one for joining groups and prefer to nod politely and bid them a good day after a brief update on who's seen what and where.
Local birders have given the fields names which is useful when following up information such as Lapwings seen in Tarts field.
I thought the guy was taking the p**s to be honest telling me to have a nosey around in tarts field until i actually looked at the map, found it and sighted 32 Lapwings in said field.

I'll get to Grips with the map and named fields in the new year as i intend frequenting canons farm
Throughout 2013. And will update this post with my visits and maybe log the species of birds for an annual count...i say maybe as I'm not really into counting or chasing birds for that tick in a book as a Twitcher would do.
For me It's all about enjoying the day and seeing what turns up unexpectedly and looking into habitat, Breeding, Migration ect: ect:

Monday March 4th 2012
Took another visit to canons today the weather has been absolute rubbish for the last few weeks but yesterday and today is stunning. A beautiful striking blue sky and everything seems to be warming up and getting spring like. Lets hope it stays this way.

Got to canons around 7.30 to songs and calls from a wonderful Song thrush. I love their piercing high pitched notes repeated in burst of 3 or 4 single notes then changing the song and repeating that 3 or 4
times.

There's a little colony of Sparrows around the farmhouse which are always nice to see as they have been on the decline for the past few years. But they seem to thrive here and this is one of their nesting
sites.

Nice and crisp today and the frost under my feet scrunching away is alerting every living thing in and around

My fingers nearly stuck to this wooden gate when i opened it.
Lots of Gulls around this morning i can hear the typicle call of the common Gull and the Crowlike screech and RaaAAHHhh of the Blackheaded gulls. When i got to field the calls were comming from i realised why they were so active and so many.

As soon as the seed was sown and famer out of the way they landed and took advantage of the free offerings.
Had a fantastic showing of four common Buzzards (two pairs) soaring high in the thermals shadowing each other and rolling over each other in a courtship display. Unfortunately i needed the Huble telescope to take half decent pictures not my 300mm canon. but here they are anyway.
